Models of the Needs and Vulnerabilities of Gay and Lesbian HIV/AIDS Patients

This Knowledge Item characterizes the treatment population in terms of indicators of service need and vulnerability and sexual orientation. Models are developed linking service needs and sexual orientation among those served by the medical and psychosocial projects. The intent of these comparisons are not to show that one group is more in need of services than another but rather to illustrate that, in general, both homosexual and heterosexual patients with HIV/AIDS have need of a comprehensive array of medical and psychosocial support services. Nonetheless it is also true that some groups defined by service needs, gender, and sexual orientation seem more likely to enter the service system through targeted community-based organizations while other groups are more likely to enter the treatment system through traditional medical providers.
