Dimensions of Risk Behaviors

The risk behaviors of 1176 male participants in the Cooperative Agreement Projects can be described in terms of four related overall themes or factors (generalized substance abuse and sex-with-women risk, heroin use, criminal justice system involvement, sex-with-men and sex work risk). The risk behaviors of 1606 female participants can also be described in terms of four related overall themes or factors (generalized substance abuse and criminal justice system involvement, heroin use, sex with an HIV-positive man, sex-with-women and sex work risk). The themes were derived through the statistical modeling method of factor analysis.

There are four major behavioral tendencies that must be considered in matching clients to treatment regimens. The themes summarize a series of several hundred relationships among behaviors like the one illustrated in the following graph.
