Trends in Quality of Life Over the Course of the Treatment Episode Part I–Graphical Analysis

In interpreting this Knowledge Item, and all others in this section on Quality of Life and Health, remember that the ratings of quality of life, symptom impact, and healthcare utilization are based on patient self reports.

This Knowledge Item examines the repeated scores of the program participants on the Quality of Life Assessment using a Total Quality of Life score formed as a composite of eight scales and a categorical health rating. Data are disaggregated based on a number of service-need and vulnerability factors. It seems fairly obvious, examining the overall trends in the data that client-rated quality of life either increases or at least stays stable, for the sample of participants as a whole. Furthermore, with one possible exception, this is true at each of the service sites.

Graphic displays of the data suggests that quality of life is improving, or at least being maintained, throughout the course of the treatment episode, for the patients served by these projects. More technical analyses, in Knowledge Items: CA-Quality of Life and Health-36, -37, -38, -39, -40, -41, -42, -43, and -44 substantiate this claim.
