Changes in Self-Reported Healthcare Utilization Over Time

When patients in the Cooperative Agreement Projects were interviewed about their healthcare utilization within a month of enrollment and after a duration of at least 150 days (with an average time between interviews of about 420 days), they reported a lower rate of visits to healthcare providers in the prior month as well as a lower rate of visits from healthcare providers. This suggests, along with more direct reports on health and quality of life, that the patients had significantly improved health as a result of participating in these programs.

In interpreting this Knowledge Item, and all others in this section on Quality of Life and Health, remember that the ratings of quality of life, symptom impact, and healthcare utilization are based on patient self reports.

Between the first and last interview, the number of reported visits to and from healthcare providers decreased slightly for the program participants. Telephone contacts and overnight hospital visits did not change.
