CA-Retention in Psychosocial Services-04
Composite Retention Curves for Gender
Cox (proportional hazards) and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to study the time that
2063 clients, in 10 programs, were retained in psychosocial services designed
to support their medical treatment. Combining data from
the ten programs, the mean estimated time of program retention is 710.73
days (standard
error = 17.41 days). The median time of retention in program is 529 days.
Women were retained in the programs about twice as long as men.
However, the gender differences were
due to differences in the sites that serve women. Four of the programs serve only women
and those sites have very high retention rates. Controlling site, gender does not have a
significant effect.
There are apparent (simple) differences in keeping men and women enrolled
in psychosocial services. These differences may, however, be attributed to differences
among the programs where the clients are enrolled. Since the "women
only" programs tend to retain clients longer in treatment, elements
of these models might prove effective in enhancing the
"mixed-gender" models, especially if the intent of the
programs is seen to be keeping clients linked to treatment.
