Alternate Ways of Calculating Data Partitioning Trees (or CHAID Analyses): II. Comparison of the Exhaustive CHAID and C&RT Algorithms

An extended set of 39 analyses using dichotomous indicators with no missing values are used to compare the results obtained if the alternate Exhaustive CHAID and C&RT algorithms are used to form the data partitioning trees. While the results are not identical because of differences between how these two mathematical algorithms model relationships, in most cases the resulting models support close to identical conclusions about the relationships between major sets of variables.

The results suggest that while the Exhaustive CHAID algorithm has a direct statistical testing basis for how it makes decisions about how to model the relationships of variables, the alternate C&RT method frequently employed throughout the classification literature will yield reasonably close alternate results.
