Predicting Substance Abuse Among Youth with, and At High-Risk for, HIV

Data from 4,111 young men and 4,085 young women participating in 10 HIV/AIDS service demonstration projects were used to predict substance abuse histories. Logistic regression analyses determined the attributes that best predict substance abuse. Men who are younger, HIV-positive, homeless, criminal justice system-involved, having a sexually transmitted disease (STD), engaging in survival sex, and participating in risky sex with men, women, and drug injectors are most likely to have a substance abuse history. For young women, the same predictors are significant, with the exception of STDs. Odds ratios of as high as 6-to-1 are associated with the significant predictors. Results suggest that information about sexual and other risk factors is also predictive of substance abuse issues among youth.
