Knowledge Item: CA-Training Impact: Provider Practices and Patient Care-03
How the Training Affected How Trainees Think About HIV

In a cross-cutting telephone study of 218 service providers who were interviewed an average of eight months after an HIV/AIDS training experience, open-ended responses were coded from the comments and examples that trainees provided to the question: "Overall, how did the training that you attended affect how you think about HIV?"

Eight content categories were identified: (1) Specific Information about Patient Care; (2) Insight and Validation; (3) General Information about HIV; (4) Heightened Awareness about HIV/AIDS; (5) Changed Attitudes and Beliefs; (6) Greater Comfort, Confidence, and Compassion in HIV Care; (7) No Effect Because Already Knowledgeable; The "Resistant Trainee"; and (8) No Effect.

High training effectiveness ratings were most associated with examples about how the training changed attitudes and beliefs, how it provided greater comfort, confidence, and compassion, or how it heightened awareness.

Program administrators were much more likely to report that they acquired specific information about patient care due to the training. However, trainee characteristics did not predict how positively the training was perceived.
