How the Training Affected How Trainees Educate Others About Care

In a cross-cutting telephone study of 218 service providers who were interviewed an average of eight months after HIV/AIDS training, trainees were asked: "How has the training you attended improved or changed the way people in your area educate others about care?" They were asked to provide a specific example from their own experience showing how the training affected how others in the service system are trained.

Responses were coded into four categories: (1) Heightened Awareness and Improved Communication; (2) Greater Confidence in Patient Care; (3) Changed Policies or Procedures; and (4) No Effect.

Trainees who provided examples about how the training experience provided them with greater confidence in patient care rated it most positively. Trainee characteristics did not predict the types of open-ended examples of change that trainees provided, yet did predict training effectiveness ratings (with the effect being due to project site).
