How the Training Affected Collaborations Among Agencies

In a cross-cutting telephone study of 218 service providers who were interviewed an average of eight months after HIV/AIDS training, trainees were asked: "How have the training session(s) you attended improved or changed the way service providers interact with each other and provide services?" They were asked to provide a specific example from their own experience about how the training(s) affected collaborations among agencies.

Examination of the open-ended responses revealed the five general categories: (1) Increased Communication; (2) Increased Referral Network; (3) More Coordinated Services; (4) Information Source; and (5) No Effect; Unclassified Responses.

Respondents rated the training experience most positively when they cited examples of post-training collaborations and the development of coordinated services. These changes were the result of learning about sources for consultation at the training. Educators, however, were much less likely to identify examples of new information sources as a result of the training.

Trainee characteristics significantly predicted training effectiveness ratings such that psychosocial workers rated the training as less effective in this area compared to physicians and other medical professionals.
